Custom Finish

Your choice of finish...

The ultimate look, feel, and function of your installation depends heavily on two critical choices:

Which wood should be used, and how should it be finished?

These are not two separate questions, but are linked because some materials dictate the use of specific finishes and some finishes dictate the use of specific materials. For more information about our premium woods, click here.

Stains & Conversion Varnish

Oak Ridge uses stains and conversion varnish formulated for our use by Alternative Materials Technology also of Chico, California. AMT has created a conversion varnish that meets California's rigorous pollution standards and sets a new standard for durability. To insure proper adhesion, only AMT stains, tested for compatibility, are applied. The employees in our finish department have the unique opportunity to be trained by AMT's technicians and work closely with them.

About Conversion Varnish

Description: A high solids, low VOIC, premium grade, catalyzed wood finishing system. 49TC will provide excellent build compared to nitrocellulose lacquers. Catalyzed varnishes typically outlast standard lacquers because of their high degree of toughness, durability, and water and chemical resistance. This product will provide superior quality for kitchen cabinets and furniture, with the following advantages:

  • Fast drying.
  • Excellent moisture resistance.
  • Meets Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) test requirements.
  • Resists staining or damage from many household chemicals.
  • Excellent toughness and mar resistance.
  • Excellent cold check resistance.
  • Self-sealing—eliminates the need for a separate sealer product.
  • High solids allows full build with fewer coats.
  • Resists yellowing from the effects of sunlight and age.

Paint

It is usually best for paint-grade cabinets to be finished on site after installation.

Thermo-Foil

As an alternative to painted cabinet doors, Oak Ridge offers "Deco-Form" doors manufactured for us by Decorative Specialties. These are MDF doors encapsulated in a high-tech membrane that is almost indestructible. If you choose a melamine interior for your cabinets, the only parts requiring painting will be the face frame and the finished ends. If you choose a European-style cabinet, no finished surfaces will require painting.

Plastic Laminates

Cabinets totally encapsulated with plastic laminate have been popularized by their use in medical and commercial applications. Their durability, cleanliness, and resistance to moisture is unequaled by other materials. Oak Ridge offers laminate cabinets in European styles.

Care and Cleaning of Wood Products Coated with AMT Conversion Varnish

Wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. To remove grease and oil, use a sponge wet with mild soapy water or household detergent, followed by a damp cloth. Wipe with a dry towel. Do not use cleaning fluid, polishing oil or lemon oil. Polishing or oiling is not required and will not help the finish and may even cause damage. For more information about caring & maintaining your wood products please see our Cabinetry Care & Maintenance page.
